1939 – 2016
Helen Hall, longest serving Member of Synchronized Swimming Australia (SSAI), has died at the age of 76.
Helen’s involvement with Synchronized Swimming in Australia spanned 30 years, from 1981 to 2011. Her volunteering instincts proved invaluable as she took up various roles including Level 1 coaching course presenter for 15 years, judging at State and National level, Meet Manager for State and National competitions not to mention slotting into time-keeping and scoring positions at short notice in order to keep the wheels in motion. Nothing was too much trouble for Helen and she gave her time willingly. Her volunteering extended to various positions in the organisation of World Swimming Championships in Perth 1991, 1998, Melbourne in 2007, and Commonwealth Games in Melbourne 2006. Her encyclopedic knowledge of the Sport was invaluable to all she worked with.
Helen was also a hard working and valuable Committee member, serving on the Victorian Synchro Committee for 17 years and as a SSAI Board member, in the role of Honorary Secretary for 16 years until her retirement in 2011. She was a Life Member of Nunawading Swimming Club, Victorian Synchro and SSAI.
Helen was the epitome of what volunteering was all about – unstinting loyalty, selfless dedication, diligence and the willingness to take on any job that is asked of them. She derived the greatest satisfaction in living to see Australia being represented in eight Olympic Games and supporting the athletes in reaching their potential in a sport that they loved. This was her reward.
As a Board Member of SSAI for ten years I cannot speak highly enough of the support Helen afforded me during this time. Her knowledge base was a valuable resource, playing a big part in planning for the future. Helen will be fondly remembered not only for her unstinting loyalty and contribution to Synchronized Swimming in Australia but for the simple act of friendship. Thank you, Helen.
